GTA 6 Extended Look: What It Means for FiveM

-- gta 6 · published 28 august 2026, 14:18 utc · var fivem team
-- 27 minutes, base ps5 · single-player only at launch · no pc announced

Rockstar released 27 minutes of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay on August 27, first on Netflix, then free on YouTube six hours later. Three facts in that announcement matter more to a FiveM server owner than anything in the footage: GTA 6 launches November 19 on consoles only, it launches as a single-player game with no online mode announced, and there is still no PC version. Here is what that means for roleplay, and what the 27 minutes quietly confirmed about the systems your server already runs.

What Rockstar showed

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look ran 27 minutes and premiered on Netflix on August 27 at 3 PM ET, before going up free on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 site six hours later. Rockstar says every frame is in-game footage captured on a base PlayStation 5, where the game currently runs at 30 fps.

The footage follows Jason and Lucia through Vice City, switching between them the way GTA 5 switched between its three leads. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, put his most recent playthrough at around 80 hours, structured in chapters like Red Dead Redemption 2. It is the longest look Rockstar has ever given at an unreleased game, and it is worth watching in full.

None of that is why this page exists. Three things announced around it change more for a FiveM server than 27 minutes of Vice City ever could.

It ships single-player only

This is the headline nobody led with. Rockstar's own FAQ on the PlayStation Store states that Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience. There is no online mode on November 19, and Rockstar has announced no release window for one, no roadmap and no confirmation that a successor to GTA Online is even in development.

There is precedent, and it points the same way. GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA V in 2013, and Rockstar later sold the two as separate products. Whatever the multiplayer plan is this time, it is not shipping in the box, and nobody outside Rockstar knows when it will.

So on November 19 there will be millions of people finishing an 80-hour campaign on a console, with no multiplayer GTA to move on to. That has never happened before at this scale.

Still no PC version

The Extended Look contained no PC announcement. GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, and that is the entire list.

This is the fact that settles the roleplay question, and it is worth being blunt about why. Roleplay platforms run on PC. A console cannot load a mod platform, cannot join a community server and cannot run a framework. So until a PC version of GTA 6 exists, GTA 6 roleplay cannot exist either, no matter what Rockstar decides about modding. GTA V took roughly 18 months to reach PC after its console release. Nothing suggests this one will be faster.

Put the two facts together and the picture is unusually clear: for the foreseeable future, if you want multiplayer GTA roleplay, FiveM on GTA V is not the best option available. It is the only one.

What FiveM already does

Here is the part that made roleplay players laugh on August 27. A large share of what Rockstar spent 27 minutes presenting has been running on FiveM servers for years, in some cases for the better part of a decade.

Clothing stores you walk into and browse. Tattoo parlours, barbers, streetwear shops. A gym you actually train in. Fishing. Basketball. Opening a fridge and eating what is in it. Robbing a convenience store alone or with a friend, and choosing between grabbing more and getting out clean. Breaking into a car with a slim jim instead of a cutscene. Carrying a limited number of weapons and leaving the rest in your trunk. Interacting with a character by holding a button and picking how you speak to them.

That last point is worth sitting with. Rockstar is selling a salon, a Vice City clothing line and a custom shop as pre-order bonuses. On a FiveM server, a barber, a clothing store and a tattoo parlour are not bonus content. They are base features, and they have been for years.

Every one of those is a solved problem in FiveM roleplay. Not an approximation of it, the actual mechanic, running on live servers with hundreds of players in them right now. That is not a criticism of GTA 6, which will do all of it better and inside one coherent world. It is a straightforward observation about where the genre Rockstar is building toward has already been living.

If you have been putting off building a server because you were waiting to see what GTA 6 does with roleplay, the Extended Look answered that: it does not do roleplay, it does not do multiplayer, and it does not run on your PC.

What to do with your server

Nothing about your setup changes this week. No update to install, no migration to plan, no compatibility to worry about. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

What does change is the calendar. Between now and November 19 there is a rising tide of attention on GTA, and in the weeks after launch there is a large audience of console players with a finished campaign and nothing multiplayer to play. Communities that already exist when that happens are the ones that capture it. Communities that start building in December are late.

The practical version: get the server stable and populated now, make sure the systems people expect from that trailer are actually in your server, and be discoverable when the search traffic arrives.

The confirmed timeline

  1. August 2023

    Rockstar acquires Cfx.re

The team behind FiveM and RedM joins Rockstar Games. The largest roleplay platform in gaming becomes first-party technology.

  2. January 2026

    Cfx Marketplace launches

Rockstar builds official commerce infrastructure around FiveM, a signal that the platform is part of the long-term plan and not a legacy acquisition.

  3. July 2026

FiveM ships for GTA V Enhanced

Early access support for the current-generation build of GTA V, with rebuilt networking and a reworked voice system. Asset Escrow is not supported on it yet.

  4. August 27, 2026

    An Extended Look

27 minutes of gameplay on Netflix, then free on YouTube. Single-player only confirmed, no online mode announced, no PC version announced.

  5. November 19, 2026

    GTA 6 launches on consoles

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. A single-player game, on platforms that cannot run a mod framework.

  6. Not announced

GTA 6 on PC, GTA 6 multiplayer, GTA 6 modding

Three separate unknowns, and roleplay needs all three. Until then, PC roleplay lives exclusively on FiveM and GTA V.

The longer version of this timeline, kept current as things are confirmed, is in our FiveM & GTA 6 guide, and the migration question raised by Enhanced is covered in the GTA V Enhanced guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does GTA 6 have multiplayer at launch?

No. Rockstar's own FAQ on the PlayStation Store states that Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience. No online mode ships on November 19, and Rockstar has announced no release window for one. For reference, GTA Online arrived two weeks after GTA V in 2013, and it was a separate product.

Will GTA 6 come to PC?

Nothing has been announced. GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S only, and the Extended Look contained no PC announcement. GTA V took roughly 18 months to reach PC after its console release. Until a PC version exists, GTA roleplay cannot exist on GTA 6 at all, because roleplay platforms only run on PC.

Will FiveM work on GTA 6?

Nothing official has been announced for GTA 6 modding. What is confirmed: Rockstar acquired Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM, in 2023, made FiveM the only authorized GTA V multiplayer mod platform, launched the Cfx Marketplace in January 2026 and shipped FiveM for GTA V Enhanced in July 2026. Every signal points to Cfx.re being the sanctioned platform whenever GTA 6 opens up, but treat any date you read as speculation.

Should I still start a FiveM server before GTA 6 launches?

The launch window is an argument for it, not against it. GTA 6 will pull an enormous amount of attention back to GTA, and console players who finish an 80-hour single-player campaign with no online mode to move on to are exactly the audience that discovers roleplay. That audience lands on PC, on GTA V, on FiveM, because there is nowhere else for it to go.

Will the scripts I buy today still work after November 19?

Yes. Nothing about the GTA 6 launch touches GTA V or FiveM. Your server, your framework and your scripts run exactly as they do now, and PC roleplay stays on GTA V well beyond the console launch.
